About Alan

Alan James is a Consultant Surgeon specialising in Upper Gastrointestinal and Laparoscopic Surgery. He was appointed as an NHS Consultant in 2011. He has held the role of Clinical Lead for General Surgery and the Trauma Lead for Surrey and Sussex Healthcare.

His regular clinical practice includes the surgical and endoscopic management of gallstone disease, hernia repair, treatment of reflux, the management of achalasia and emergency general surgery. His private practice mirrors his NHS work and is held at Spire Gatwick Park Hospital.

Alan qualified in medicine from St Catherine’s College, Oxford University, and Kings College London. He undertook surgical training in London and the South East Thames region with the final year at St Thomas’ Hospital.

Alan is married and has three sons. He works in a busy NHS unit and maintains an active interest in new and developing areas in surgery. Outside work he has interests in music, motorcycles, walking and sailing. He is a keen guitar player.
